Pole Dance Victory - We Won!
Many of you responded with anger after hearing that Swansea University Pole Fitness Society had been banned by the Swansea University Student Union (SUSU).
Here is the original article containing the Pole Dance Community response to members of the SUSU board. When the SUSU failed to respond we escalated our response with an open letter which we also sent to the press and the story went viral.
We heard reports that the SUSU were hoping that by ignoring the correspondence the issue would simply go away and people would forget the story but this was never going to happen and we then proceeded to escalate the case against SUSU.
Meanwhile the Swansea Pole Fitness polers were keeping the in-house campaign going, they were featured in the SUSU magazine, they liaised with other clubs to gain support, they challenged the way the ban had been implemented and finally they have been reinstated as a recognised Pole Fitness Society by the SUSU.
They were on the front line but they knew that we were all behind them. Thanks to our member's direction, the PDC was ready with a barrister to call for a Judicial Review. Alongside this, we were organising a vote of no confidence in the Board, following SUSU procedures.
The final referendum was won by a staggering 132 votes for with only 10 votes against the reinstatement of the club.
We feel this case shows the power we have as a group of people who are passionate about pole and who will not tolerate unfounded prejudice against us. Whatever our style of pole we will defend our right to pole dance for fitness and recreation and we will continue to fight the daily battle we face.
Thank you to everyone who personally supported this campaign, we had over 200 e-mails from individuals from across the globe. Lastly a huge congratulations to the Swansea Pole Fitness Society and their amazing president Bethan Morris for reporting this matter to us.
We are delighted that PDC Approved 4 star instructor Dawn Roberts can now continue providing pole classes for the Swansea polers.
We are there for the bad times as well as the good.
It only remains to wish the new SUSU Pole Society the very best of luck in their poling and their studies.
Job done :-)
