Featured Pole Dancing Instructor Angel F from Discoveries Dance, Maryland, USA.
Discoveries Pole Dance was launched by Angel F in 2010 to help fill a need for professional and safety-aware pole dance instructors. She developed this course using knowledge gained from fifteen years of experience as a professional educator and from extensive research on the impact of aerial dance on the upper body and the joints. A lifelong fitness enthusiast, she fell in love at first spin and hasn't been to a traditional gym since. With a belief that a well taught pole class can be safe, healthy and downright FUN for men and women of many ages, Angel's mission is to help promote pole dance as an acceptable form of fitness.
We spoke to Angel to find out more about her:
When did you first pole dance?
"A girlfriend that I used to go to the gym with told me about this 'fun new exercise'. We went to a pole fitness studio and giggled our way through a 1 hour chair dance class followed by a one hour introductory pole dance class. We didn't want to leave it was so exhilarating! That was about 4 years ago."
What got you into pole dancing?
"The freedom I feel in the movement and the undeniable sisterhood that happens organically in the studio. I never made friends like this in yoga class!"
What's your favourite pole dancing move?
"I do love my elbow grip Ayesha!"
What's your pole dancing nemesis?
"Anything with height. I get scared up there!"
Worst pole injury to date?
"Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). It took a year and a half to heal and took a huge toll on my pole practice. As a positive though, I stopped teaching and had time to write my teacher training course. I don't know if I would have done that had I not had the injury."
What's your favourite pole - brass, titanium, chrome? 38mm, 45mm, 50mm?
"I have 38 brass spinner that I just adore. I cling to that thing like glue. But I also have a soft spot for my platinum stages 45 stainless steel. It's great for static spins. No pole burn!"
Funniest student moment?
"I taught a bachelorette party and one of the girls farted while we were sitting in straddle position on the floor. She was behind me so I think the rest of the party thought it may have been me! Luckily the studio owner came along at that moment and moved us to another room for group photos. I still cringe when I think about it, but I have to laugh too."
What hobbies do you have aside from pole dancing?
"Reading, fostering rescue dogs (dachshunds). We've fostered over 25 dogs now and it is a wonderful feeling saving dogs from euthanasia."
